A cargo elevator is primarily used to lift, carry, or elevate cargo or goods instead of humans. It's what the name itself suggests. Talking about cargo, the other common name or word for it is cargo elevator. This device is usually installed inside the freight elevators and uses cranes to raise or lower them.

Usually, a cargo loading and lifting elevator have a platform at its base, which contains an engine that rotates the enclosed wheels. The cranes can be used for horizontal or vertical movement. Another important factor of this device is that it must be explosion-proof and fire-proof. An ideal freight elevator must be able to lift loads that are at least 500 lbs., though most are capable of moving much more weight.

There are two types of cargo elevators: non-parallel lifts and parallel lifts. Non-parallel lifts are those that can move vertically up to four stories, while parallel lifts are those that can move only in one direction (up and down). These devices are usually very wide, which enables them to transport goods from one floor to another. They are also quite safe, and they are designed to make use of power lift engines.
