What Is a Freight Lift?
A freight elevator, also known as a goods lift, is a type of hydraulic lifting platform used in industrial plants, restaurants, and other workplaces to transport cargo from the lower floor to the upper floor. Unlike passenger elevators, they travel at slower speeds and can carry much heavier loads than other types of elevators.
The term "freight elevator" is often used interchangeably with the terms "car elevator," "goods lift" and "goods hoist." Each of these names refers to the purpose of the elevator. Unlike passenger elevators, which are meant for public use, freight elevators are usually used in facilities where workers need to load or unload large amounts of heavy, bulky items.
Generally, freight elevators have no passenger doors and are designed for people to load and unload the car from either side or front. This allows for easier movement and makes the elevator safer to work in.
Freight elevators may be equipped with manual or electronic doors. Either way, the doors must be manually opened before a user can move their load into the lift.
If the elevator has electronic doors, it should have a "DOOR OPEN" button next to the call button. Pressing this button sends the elevator to the floor where you want to load your goods. If it does not, you can move the door by pressing a lever or strap.
There are three different types of freight elevators: fixed, non-scissor and modular. The first is the traditional type, which uses a shaft between brick walls and a motor hoistway to lift goods from one level to the other. The second type is a free-standing elevator, which doesn't require a pit or a shaft, and the third is the non-scissor freight elevator, which is suitable for workplaces where a pit is not available or cannot be excavated.
Unlike passenger elevators, which are usually dark with hand-rubbed walnut finishes, freight elevator cars tend to be utilitarian. They have 14 gauge or better steel wall panels and a heavily reinforced gate for handling the weight of vehicles, machinery, and other large items that are moved through them on a regular basis. The car's floors are usually made of no skid steel, with rubber mats to protect against slips.
While the freight elevator may have customary passenger elevator music, the cabin is likely to lack any of the amenities found in a passenger elevator. The cabin will have a more utilitarian feel and may be dark, with little or no furniture in it.
Class C1 and C2: Loading with Industrial Trucks
There is a specific class of freight elevators that allow for the loading of a one-piece load by an industrial truck onto the platform. The combined weight of the truck and the load must not exceed the rated capacity of the elevator. This can be done with a forklift or a lift truck, but the loading device must be removed before the elevator can be operated.
